[MUSIC REVIEW] SHINee - Dream Girl (2013)

Hellooooooooooo :D

Yesterday, five shining boys who are in a boy group called SHINee made their official Korean comeback this year with an album titled, "Dream Girl - The Misconceptions of You". This album is the first chapter of the whole album called Dream Girl itself. Confusing, enough? Well, basically, SHINee are going to release a two album called The Misconceptions of You, which released yesterday, and The Misconceptions of Me, which going to be released in April. These two albums are a part of the one big album called Dream Girl. Hopefully this explanation can help you :)

For the first chapter, The Misconceptions of You, the title track called Dream Girl. Curious enough about who is SHINee's Dream Girl? Well, check out the music video below. This time, SM Entertainment, SHINee's management company, is generous enough to release two music video, drama and dance version, in the same day.

Such an eye candy music video!! For those of you who are curious about SHINee's Dream Girl, unfortunately, you have to be disappointed because you cannot see who the girl is in this music video :p First of all, I am going to explain about the song first. Dream Girl is about how Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin fall in love with a girl that they only see in their dream. They wish they can be with the girl, but, unfortunately, it does not come true since the girl only appeared in their dream. Well, it's kind of funny because this is actually what fangirl feels when they see them hehehe.

Moreover, this song is like a different thing for SHINee, something new from them. But, at the same time, this song is soooo SHINee. Hahahahahahaha this is one of weird explanation ;) Anyway, I really like the music in the Dream Girl, especially the guitar part. It can pump up our spirit. As for the members' vocals, I think five of them did really great job here. I am surprise with how large amount of line that Taemin has to sing in this song and fortunately, his voice did not disappointed us. I also surprise with Minho's improved voice and rap. Keep up the good work , Choi Minho!! Key, Onew, and Jonghyun were good as always. Jonghyun's Jamjam kkaman part is my favorite part in this song.

For the concept, this time they go for neat concept with suit, shirt, and jeans. But, still with colorful colors because it's not SHINee if they are not full of color. Eventhough they still wear colorful outfits, the outfits are more into pastel colors. Beside that, they also use dark colors like black or dark blue for one of the setting in the music video. All of these successfully showed us that SHINee already mature, but still adorable and not forget the root of SHINee itself. I really like this slow transition. I mean like they don't have to go shirtless for their album photo shoots or something to show that, "Hey, look we are no longer the skinny boys that seduce noonas (a term for older woman called by male in Korean) and wear colorful skinny jeans! We already men now!", or something like that (ehmm...Sherlock...ehmm). Just with simple things like this, it is already enough.

The success of this concept also showed by how each member fit this concept very well. What I love about SHINee is each member has distinct characteristics that make them different from other members. It's like each member shine their own way and it clearly shown in this concept. Onew was soooooo adorkable and sooooo him in Dream Girl. Meanwhile, Jonghyun continues to make our heart flutter with his hotness. And yes, he looks mature now. Key.....well, Key is Key, the fierce, sexy, yet adorable diva. For Minho, he looks mighty fine this time!!! And surprisingly, he also showed us his little boy side on the music video, which was super duper cute. God, sometimes I forget you only two years older than me ;) And lastly, the youngest member, Taemin, who already mature and sooo handsome, but still, we can see the little boy side on him. My same aged friend, you grew up well :")

Now, for the music video, like I said earlier, SM Entertainment is very kind this time by giving us the drama and dance version music video on the same day. I am going to explain about the drama version first, which is fit with the song meaning. The music video is about how SHINee members have an adventure in their dreamland and meet an unknown girl with covered face. They cannot reach the girl because they always ended up waking up from their sleep. The drama version music video is kind of quirky with sudden change of setting and the members' movement. But, it was really cute with the usage of colorful colors and each member's confused expression.

In Dream Girl, thankfully, SM Entertainment manage to use the square box in the right way with many settings from bedroom to a place in their dreamland that full of black and white stripes. I love the green door setting! And this time, I was satisfied by how SM puts an effort into making the music video.

For the outfits, I love it!!! It was so neat, colorful, and of course, so SHINee. I am totally digging  Jonghyun's white flowery jeans, which actually looks so much better if it is wore by a girl hahahaha. The only weird thing is Taemin's pink-yellow pencil pants, which was actually cute and genius, but still, weird. Thank God, he can pulls it off well.

As for the dance version, it uses two setting that already appear in the drama version. Since it is called the dance version, it emphasizes on the choreography of this song. In Dream Girl, SHINee tries something new with their choreography. This time, they play with standing microphone, which was interesting. Although the choreography with this song is a toned down version of SHINee's usual complicated routine, trust me, it still hard. You may think that it is easy only holding and sliding microphone, but, actually, it takes a lot of concentration to not miss steps or slip the microphone. I am really looking forward for their live performance, but it seems that I have to wait until next week. We all knew that in the first week of their comeback stage, SM Entertainment idols are mostly lip sync and honestly, it was quite disappointing.

Overall, Dream Girl is not disappointing. It shows us who SHINee is, what kind of song that we sing, and what is our concept. Great song, impressive vocals, fun music video, good concept, and well-played choreography. I like how SM started to put an effort into making Korean comeback music video this year (see Girls' Generation - I Got A Boy Music Video). Cannot wait for their showcase today and comeback stage tomorrow!!! Way to go, shining boys!!
