[MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW] TWICE - Yes or Yes (2018)

Hello everyone! It’s been a long time since I greet all of you like this. How’s everyone going? Are you still in tune with K-Pop music industry & read the review on my blog?

Obviously I have not stopped paying attention to K-Pop music industry. However, the time that I spend to write review decreases nowadays. This is because I am currently taking master degree program overseas.

As a master student, I have to analyze a lot of reading list. This keeps me busy...and tired hahaha. This also makes me could not do album review in the moment. I apologize for those of you who are waiting :(

Right now, I am focusing on music video review. But, don’t worry! I will try to review K-Pop album again when I am not busy :)

Anyway, today’s post is about TWICE third comeback in 2018. The girls never stop being productive and continue to entertain public. On November 5th 2018, TWICE released their latest album called Yes or Yes. This mini album has similar name title track.

TWICE continues last year’s pattern where they have more than two singles in a year. This is great to keep up their popularity. But at the same time, it makes me worried whether each of their single has similar charm.

How does Yes or Yes fare into? Does it offer something new from TWICE? Check out my review about their newest single below..........

TWICE does not go too far from their signature style on Yes or Yes. It is still a high-energy pop song with strong beat. There is catchy phrase (Yes or Yes) during refrain part. Unfortunately, the hook part is not as infectious as their previous hits. It falls flat if you compare to the song verses. In fact, the refrain becomes Yes or Yes weakest link.

Yes or Yes verses offer more exciting dynamic to the song. Each verse showcases different music genre from hip-hop, doo-wop to electronic dance. The song flow does not become disjointed since its melody stays the same.

Another interesting point comes from TWICE vocal. It is nice to see them let Jeongyeon and Mina has most parts in Yes or Yes. Both have capability in handling different parts. Plus, their vocal fits the song tone.

However, there major issue on TWICE way of singing. Their chanting does not fit Yes or Yes flow toward the end. The way they sing Yes or Yes part during chorus also sounds abrupt.

In terms of music video, TWICE brings back spooky aesthetic. Darker color like blue and grey along with unusual cinematography dominates Yes or Yes music video. The storyline also matches this concept. TWICE tries to make a guy could not resist them through various magic tricks just like Yes or Yes lyrics.

Each TWICE member presents different trick to capture the guy. For example, Chaeyoung reads tarot card while Momo plays with fire. Their action happens on different scene in order to make each member shines on their own. This is TWICE signature style and it always works on their various music videos.

Aside from spooky theme, TWICE shows a glimpse of Yes or Yes choreography on the music video. It looks more complicated than their previous attempts. However, some dances do not seem match with the song beat.

TWICE sticks to their comfort zone in Yes or Yes. It is full of TWICE signature style from energetic pop song with catchy hook part and unique music video. It still enjoyable, but it does not as engaging as their previous hits.

TWICE effort to be productive throughout a year deserves appreciation. However, I wish the girls took a short break to reflect on their music direction. They have a chance to explore more in diverse music genre without losing identity. Take your time, TWICE.
