Today I am going to review about a movie again after reviewing about albums on my two previous posts. The movie that I am going to review today is an Indonesian movie called 5cm. This movie is based on a book with the same title which was written by Donny Dhirgantoro. This book was first being published in 2005 and later on, it became popular. I was one of the person who curious about this book and decided to buy it eventhough I actually never read the whole book until now :(
As expected from the book's popularity, Soraya Intercine Films decided to adapt it into a movie with Rizal Mantovani as the director. When I knew about this plan, I was really anticipate it because I knew 5cm has an interesting stories. Beside that, the trailer was also triggered me to become more and more curious. No wonder I expect something big from this movie. Now, the biggest question is did the movie really meet my expectation? Well, you have to continue read my post to know about this :p
5cm story is about five best friends, Genta (Fedi Nuril), Riani (Raline Shah), Zafran (Herjunot Ali), Arial (Denny Sumargo), and Ian (Igor Saykoji) who have been together for a long time. Their togetherness can be shown by the activities that they always did together every weekends. Because of this activities which later on become their routines, they started to feel bored. To overcome their boredom and to create new atmosphere, they decided to stop meeting and contacting each other for three months. Eventhough it was actually really hard for them, they can passed through it. So, to celebrate their successfulness after three months, Genta come up with a surprising idea. His idea is to climb to to the top of Mahameru mountain in Malang, East Java. Five of them, including Arial's younger sister Dinda (Pevita Pearce) who insisted to join his brother, agreed with his plan and their journey to Mahameru mountain begin. Will they make it or not? Well, you have to watch it yourself :D
The story is actually great and very interesting, but, unfortunately, the director seems do not know where to focus on this movie. There are several moments, such as Ian's story when he is about to prepare his thesis, which were too long and it makes the moment that people should be anticipated, which is their journey to Mahameru, was being rushed. Maybe the director wants to make the movie similar to the novel by filming many aspects which included in the novel, but I think it does not really worked. But, still, this is an opinion as a person who have not read the book.
Another problem of this movie is the script. Many dialogues that happened on this movie screamed "awkward" in my opinion. But, maybe it also happened with the lack of chemistry between the characters. As best friends who already closed with each other for a long time, sometimes they seems to awkward with one another, but at several scenes, their chemistry was believable. So. I am kinda confused with it hahahahaha.
Fortunately, the cinematography covered it up. All of the scenery on this movie were really amazing!!! From the mountain until the lake, it was really beautiful!! While watching this movie, I feel proud with my homeland, Indonesia :)
For the casts, out of six main character, Herjunot Ali is my favorite. His character, Zafran, who is a funny and confident guy that love to make a poets, can easily be the audiences' favorite as long as the cast played it well and Herjunot Ali did not make us disappointed with his acting. He is not only able to make the audiences laugh, but also make us touched at several scenes, such as the scene when he said a vow during his journey to Mahameru mountain.
After Herjunot Ali, Igor Saykoji is my second favorite. He is able to make audiences laugh with his funny behaviours, his love for noodles, and of course, his love for Happy Salma, an Indonesian actress, which were hilarious. Igor Saykoji also looked relax when played Ian, that is why his dialogue was not awkward unlike the others. Another thing, he able to create a chemistry between him, Herjunot Ali, and Denny Sumargo, so at some scenes, especially when they are in train, their friendship seemed believable.
As for Fedi Nuril, well he is the one who changed my perception about his acting when I watched this movie for the second time (The first time I watched 5cm, I got stucked by Jakarta's traffic which makes me late for about more than one hour. That is why I watched it again). The first time I watched his acting on this movie, I cringed with his stiff and awkward acting especially when he said his dialogues which is like reading a script. I am actually his fan (Thanks to his box office movie, Ayat Ayat Cinta), so I was like "what happened to him?". But after second time watching it, I did not hate his acting as much as the first time. I began to understand that it was actually his way of acting and to be honest, I think he actually portrayed Genta, who is like an unofficial leader of them, well. Fedi's strong point is on the emotional scenes, such as (Spoiler Alert!) the scene when they thought Ian was dead and when Riani rejected his love confessions.
Raline Shah and Denny Sumargo's acting were sometimes good, sometimes too stiff. Raline was good at crying scenes. She did not crying out loud with tears everywhere, but only with a few tears and good expression, she able to make me sad too. But, she also had problem with her stiffness when saying her dialogues. Unlike Raline, Denny was too forceful on emotional scenes. His crying scene was not believeable during (Spoiler Alert!) the scene where they thought Ian was dead. On the other hand, his acting as Arial, who is afraid of girls, convince me when he has to face a girl and make me laugh.
Meanwhile, sorry to say, Pevita Pearce was the worst actress out of six of them. Her acting as Dinda is sometimes too forceful which made it looks fake. Until the end of the movie, I am not really sure about what kind of person Dinda is. Is she spoiled, naive, sincere or cheerful? Once again, sorry to say, I think Pevita did not deliver her character well.
Overall, 5cm has an interesting story, but unfortunately, it lacks on the execution. Still, if you are an Indonesian, you have to watch this movie to see the beautiful scenery and to pay attention to the story which I think can increase your nationalism :)
