[DRAMA REVIEW] Tomorrow With You (2017)

Welcome to my first drama review in 2017!  I’m sorry to keep you guys waiting because truthfully, I haven’t watched many dramas since the beginning of this year L.

It’s not that all of them were bad; we actually have several hits early this year. It’s just that most of their stories did not pique my interest. Only few of those dramas caught my attention. One of them is Tomorrow With You.

This drama made me curious because of its interesting storyline, which mixed romance and fantasy genre. I was also curious to see the leads duet, Lee Jae Hoon and Shin Min Ah, as couple. Both of them proven to be solid actors and actress based on their past projects. Does it enough to make you guys curious too? Well if you are still not sure, just check my review about Tomorrow with You below…………………….

Yoo So Joon (Lee Jae Hoon) has the ability to time travel to the future. He could go back and forth between present and future days by riding subway. Yoo So Joon makes a great use of his ability. His premonition leads him to be a successful real-estate company CEO.

In time-travelling, Yoo So Joon has one rule, which is never intervening others. He only changes his future and let other people live their life. But, Yoo So Joon eventually break this rule. He decided to save Song Ma Rin (Shin Min Ah) life, a former child actress turned photographer.

Yoo So Joon believed Song Ma Rin existence could prevent his bad luck in the future. He even takes bold move by marrying Song Ma Rin. What is exactly happening in Yoo So Joon future? Well, you have to watch this drama to know the answer!

Dealing with time-travel issue could be tricky for dramas. Each character’s action in the past will have consequences in their future and this went other way too. There must be logical explanation between changing fate. Then there has to be limitation about how far they could change past and future. If a drama failed to address this issue, it would become messy.

Tomorrow With You luckily nailed its time-travelling aspect. All Yoo So Joon acts and consequences have solid explanation while time-travelling twists wrapped up nicely. It was quite rare for Korean drama to have answer for everything and not leaving our questions hanging in the end. Good job with that!

Aside from time travelling, Tomorrow With You also nailed its romantic aspect. Lee Jae Hoon and Shin Min Ah created sizzling chemistry, which made us believe they were in love. Their interaction was sweet and intimate without going overboard. You could not help but smile whenever they flirted with each other. At the same time, you could also feel pain when they separated.

However, Tomorrow With You is not a perfect drama. It has problem on its pacing and characterization. The pacing seemed off in the middle of this drama.  Writer Heo Sung Hye seemed confused to develop and solve conflicts. This resulted to abrupt resolution although all of the conflicts were answered clearly at the end. It was quite disappointing because Tomorrow With You has two major build-ups that finished without climax.

Meanwhile, the characterization of Yoo So Joon himself was lacking too. It’s quite hard to connect with him, especially at the beginning of this drama. We got to know his family and job background, but there is no depth on it. It’s like all of them only assigned as supporting information about him. The same thing happened with other characters. We never know more about them aside from being Yoo So Joon and Song Ma Rin family or friends. Still, they showcased great acting which made us enjoyed watching Tomorrow With You.

The shining gem of this drama was Song Ma Rin. She was the only character who has strong characterization and development throughout 16 episodes. We knew what happened with her, how much she has been through, and how she matured from it. All of these journeys made us rooting for Song Ma Rin happiness.  This also added by Shin Min Ah great portrayal of Song Ma Rin. Her endearing yet vulnerable expressions got us to sympathize with her.

Lastly, Tomorrow With You displayed beautiful production value. The cinematography, setting, and fashion styling was gorgeous. The usage of soft and warm tone fit the romantic as well as sentimental story theme. This certain mood then emphasized through its scoring. I love how Seo In Guk and Kim Feel soundtracks resonated with Yoo So Joon and Song Marin love story.

Tomorrow With You was a nice opening for drama scene in 2017. It has good combination between time travelling and romantic love story aspect. It also supported with beautiful cinematography, setting, and scoring. Still, it has some issues such as pacing and characterization. Feel free to check if you are in the mood for romance and sentimental stuff!
