[MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW] Jung Eunji - Hopefully Sky (2016)

Hello everyone! Finally, I’m back with another music review! It’s been a long time since I write music review. I think it’s because there is still no big names who made a comeback early this year and I’m not really paying attention to rookie groups that’s why I don’t really write music reviews lately. I’m sorry guys, but don’t worry the review is back ;)

Today, I will write a review about solo debut of Jung Eunji, the main vocalist of A Pink. Jung Eunji recently made her solo debut with mini album, Dream on April 18th, which happened to be a day before A Pink 5th years anniversary. There are six tracks on this album and the title track is Hopefully Sky.

Jung Eunji is the strongest vocalist in A Pink with wide public appeal. People have been anticipating her solo debut since long time ago. So, how is her solo? Check out my review of Jung Eunji’s title track Hopefully Sky below………………………………………

Hopefully Sky is a surprise release from Eunji. If we hear her powerful vocal, we expect her to release a ballad or up tempo song that full of challenging notes. Instead, she has a medium tempo folk song as her title track. Listening to Hopefully Sky makes us feel calm and relax. This song has acoustic guitar and drum as the main instrument with a little bit of harmonica. I like the harmonica part because it gives off the nostalgic feeling. It also gives few changes to the song since the melody is quite repetitive and it tends to become boring.

Eunji’s voice gives life to Hopefully Sky. Her voice sounds soothing to ear. She plays out her vocal to create dynamic to the song. Her deep vocal provides a nice balance to the light instrumental. Also, emotion is one of Eunji’s strongest points in singing. It feels like she’s telling a story to us through this song.

Since Eunji takes part in writing the lyrics, Hopefully Sky lyrics tell a story about her life. Eunji reminds herself to never give up and never forget her roots such as her family, especially father who is the main focus of this song, and her hometown. It’s very touching and refreshing to hear this kind of song among others. Many K-Pop songs usually talk about falling in love, breaking up or bragging about yourself, so it’s nice to see young idol from big groups write different lyrics this time.

The lyrics go well with Hopefully Sky music video, which is about Eunji goes back to her hometown, Busan and reminiscences her past. We see her follow a little girl, who is the representation of her little self, around from school, park to the beach. At the end, they face a stair and go for different way, which also seems like the representation of different path that they take in life. The little girl then waits for her father to come home while Eunji watch the slide show of her real childhood photos. It’s a touching story that will make you miss your parents, childhood or your hometown.

The cinematography of the music video is really beautiful. It emphasizes the beauty of spring season with cherry blossom scenery and pink, green, brown color tone. The shots are gorgeous as you can see the uniqueness of Busan scenery. Eunji also fits the casual styling that shown throughout the music video. My favorite shot is when Eunji plays piano in the rooftop with Busan landscape as the background. It’s pretty, moving, and strong representation of her.

Hopefully Sky is a perfect spring theme from Jung Eunji. Touching song, beautiful voice, and gorgeous music video. It’s a great solo debut from her and interesting to see what kind of solo materials that she will do next. I love this debut because it’s fresh, but I actually still want to see her go powerful with ballad or upbeat song.

Congratulations for Eunji and looking forward to see your next release!
