[DRAMA REVIEW] Sassy Go Go (2015)

Hello everyone, I'm back with drama review! It’s been a long time since I write about it. I always want to write a review about Korean dramas, but I find it challenging because of the long episode. It means that I have to remember and stay focus to the story. That's why most of times, I usually only write a short post or list about Korean dramas.

But today, I finally write a drama review! It would be about KBS drama, Sassy Go Go that just finished last night. This drama has shorter episodes (12 episodes) compare to other Korean dramas, which usually have 16 or 20 episodes. It makes me easier to write the review because of the short episodes and the fact that it just ended.

So, here it is my review for Sassy Go Go....................................................
(beware minor Spoiler!)

Sassy Go Go tells a story about Kang Yeon Doo (Jung Eunji, Apink Eunji), a female student who sucks at study, but cares a lot about her dance club, Real Kingz. This dance club was about to disband because it disturbed the study period. To save her club, Yeon Doo agreed to join the cheerleading competition. But, new problem emerged when Real Kingz members had to work together with Baek Ho members, the cheerleading club with smart and elite students, which actually never cheer, but only study. They had to cast aside their hate towards each other in order to win the competition. For Yeon Doo, working with Baek Ho also means working with Kim Yeol (Lee Won Geun), the leader of Baek Ho who is smart, but arrogant.

Despite being the story background, cheerleader is actually not the main focus of Sassy Go Go. So, for those of you who watch it see them battle in cheerleading, you might be disappointed. This drama put a twist to the word “cheerleading”. It isn’t about how they try to win the cheerleader competition. But, it is about how you cheer others when they are feeling down, which is the essence of cheerleading itself. This drama deals with wider issues in school from study, friendship, competition, family, love to psychological issue. Whenever certain character face problem, they could always turn to the cheerleader club. They will give warm welcome and cheer for you. It’s a nice surprise to see them put a twist to the word cheerleader and cooperate it with other aspects.

The issue that the character facing is quite common in high school dramas, but what makes Sassy Go Go stands out would be the characterization. Each of them has different personality and background, especially the five lead casts. Kang Yeon Doo is the heart of the story. Her character is the representation of cheerleading itself. She’s the driving force that affects everyone in positive way. Jung Eunji does her best performance to date as Kang Yeon Doo, making her genuine and likeable. She put soul to her character and it makes us always want to root for her no matter what happen.

The opposite of her character is Kim Yeol who always acts according to his logic and doesn’t trust other people easily. His character could become typical and emotionless, but the writer put dimension to it. We see his flaws and could sympathize with him. Lee Won Geun is charming as Yeol. He could display various layers of his character through expressions beside captivating our heart with his lovely eye smile. Yeol and Yeon Doo dynamic is one of Sassy Go Go’s strong elements. I love how they complement and bring out the best in each other. This also added by the incredible chemistry between Jung Eunji and Lee Won Geun. You can’t help but smile whenever these two are together!

Beside them, we also have Jisoo as Seo Ha Joon, Yeol’s best friend who is abused by his father and has anger issue. Jisoo played this complicated character with such intensity and vulnerability. He also has strong chemistry with Lee Won Geun, which makes us believe that they are brothers for life. Meanwhile with Jung Eunji, we still secretly hope that Ha Joon could be with her too because these two have great chemistry. Chae Soo Bin does a good job as the competitive Kwon Soo Ah. She makes us hate her character because of terrible things that she does to be the best while pity her at the same time because we can see how she’s scared and anxious about things that she did. Her redemption may seem to easy for some viewers, but it’s great that they show how she still has to face consequences for her actions. Cha Hakyeon (VIXX N) acted as Ha Dong Jae, who has phobia of touching people. His issue is interesting, but unfortunately, it’s kind of undeveloped from the middle until the end of the series.

What I love the most from the characters in this drama is how each of their action makes sense.  We can relate more with them because we understand why this character does certain action. For example, when Yeon Doo is missing, we understand why Hajoon goes directly to search for her in the road while Yeol try to call the last person who goes with her. Every action that they do relates with the character’s personality. This is actually a simple thing, but not many Korean dramas did these. Most of the times, there is sudden change in the drama character to spice up the story.

When watching Sassy Go Go, we see each character emotional journey. We watch them grow as the story progressed until finally, reached a happy ending. The short episodes are beneficial for this series. It avoids the story becomes draggy, keeping the drama short and solid.

Sassy Go Go is truly a hidden gem. The story is easy to relate while the character development is strong throughout the series. This drama tells us that although there are dark times, you can always find a light to be happy. Definitely one of the best dramas!

    1. Santiiiii, thank you so much for reading my blog! I really appreciate it :) Yes, it's a pity that many people are skeptical about this drama in the beginning and it has low rating. It's totally underrated. And yes, I don't think there are any major plot holes on it.

How come I forgot the bromance??? Hahaha maybe on the next drama posts, I'll upload more screen caps.
