[MUSIC REVIEW] SHINee - Why So Serious? (2013)

SHINee is back, technically as four, with their new single, Why So Serious?, on April 26th, 2013!!!

Wait...what do you mean by four? Is one of their member leave the group or something? Well, actually no because trust me, five of them still going strong. But, apparently, their main vocalist, Jonghyun, cannot join the beginning promotion of their new single and album, Why So Serious? - The Misconceptions of Me, because he just got into an accident on April 1st, 2013, which caused his nose broken (ouch...get well soon, Jjong!!!).

While still wondering why SM decided to let Onew, Key, Minho, and Taemin promote as a quartet, let me remind you again about this year SHINee's double comeback. Basically, SHINee divided their album into two chapter. The first chapter album, Dream Girl - The Misconceptions of You, was released on February with title song called Dream Girl. While their second chapter album, Why So Serious? - The Misconceptions of Me, was released on April with Why So Serious? as their title track.

Okay, so, after quite long introduction, here it is the music video for SHINee - Why So Serious?

Okay, done!!!! Hmmmm....now, let's start from the song first. Do you know what is my reaction when I first hear the song? It's the same reaction when I first hear Girls' Generation - I Got A Boy. What the hell was this? What's with the sudden transition? It's like you combine different songs into one song. Yeah...it's fun, but at the same time, it's messy.

Why So Serious? opened with strong guitar sounds followed with screams and strong drum sounds. Point plus for SHINee because they bravely experimented with rock sound, or classic rock sound in particular, since any other boy groups rarely do this. Then, Taemin started the song then Onew then Jonghyun then Key then Onew again. Wow...so far, I like it..........until blaarr, suddenly, the reff part appeared. When I thought the sudden transition only happened once, suddenly, it happened again from reff to Minho's talking part (the part where you either love or hate it just like Jessica and Sunny's part in Flower Power by Girls' Generation) and after this, fast transition again into their singing together part (love this part by the way). Wooaahh...that's a lot!!! Or in other words, it's messy. I actually have a strong feeling it will grows on me the more I listen to it just like I Got A Boy, which I ended super like it and admitted it was genius (see my review here), but sadly, until now, I have not feeling the song yet, sorry guys :(

As for the vocal, Onew and Key is stunning as usual. Taemin continued to improve and improve after Dream Girl. I really like his part on the second verse!! While Minho...........ugh, my dear Minho, your rap already improved in Dream Girl, but why it goes downhill again with this song??? You sound weird :( For the lyrics, surprise surprise surprise...it has quite cute lyrics about a zombie fall in love with a human girl. But, still the reff does not make sense (Why So Serious?, Romeo & Juliet, Everything Will Be Alright, what are these?).

Moving on to the concept, contrary with Dream Girl that full of colorful and neat suits and pants, this time SHINee tries rebel concept with layered clothes and darker colors such as black, navy blue, green which combined with dramatic color like red. Honestly, I like how this concept is the opposite with their Dream Girl concept. Beside that, I must say all of them pull it off so well. Key obviously on the first rank since this is soooooo him followed by Onew, who just get hotter and hotter day by day. Taemin is good and despite our pessimistic opinions at first, his blonde hair actually suited him. He looked like a foreigner. But, please Taemin eat something!!! You look skinny as hell. Meanwhile for Minho....do we really need to talk about him? Because he just can pull it off every concept so well, thanks to his good posture and handsome face. And yes, I couldn't agree more that they look soo fine with their navy blue and green outfits on the music video.

Now, finally, I will talk about the music video and I must say I am disappointed with it. They say you cannot wish too high because you will end up have huge disappointment and yes, it also happened to me with this music video. After seeing Dream Girl music video, which was soo fresh, fun, unique, and colorful, I have a high hope that Why So Serious? will be, at least, as good as Dream Girl. I also have a positive mind that SM already left their old style music video that only contains of the group dance in a studio with super cool choreography while zooming in and out of it and close up for each member. My hopes also got higher when it has been mentioned that the music video will have a darker tone and it will be a sensual music video. Weew...it must be pretty cool, I thought!!!

And finally, on April 26th, 2013, I have to accept the fact that it's all lies. Why? Because SM back with their old music video style. It's like they already throw out all their money for Dream Girl and have no money left that is why they make this music video back to their old style. Luckily, they make it up by adding the story line about SHINee as zombie (but, they did not styled like zombie, they still normal) goes into a human girl's bedroom, but later on, the father found out.  But, still I am disappoint with it. It's such a pity because this song had sooooo much potential of getting a good music video if you see the lyrics. I mean they could not style these boys into a zombie while they chase after a human girl that they fall in love with. It would be super cool!!

Beside that, I feel like getting trolled with a term darker tone because apparently, SM version of darker is filming a music video with darker lighting, setting, and clothes. Well, sorry to say, that is not darker at all actually because the music video still appeared cute.

Lastly, the most frustrating part is that there is no Jonghyun in the music video. Well, this is crucial because it's not like Jonghyun left SHINee or went to the army. He still there, he still a part of SHINee. Yes, I know he is sick and because of this, why SM cannot wait a little bit more until he is healthy again? I know they cannot postpone the comeback because SHINee already have a Japan Arena Tour schedule at the end of May, but I am not asking them to postpone their comeback. Instead why don't make four of them comeback as scheduled, but release the music video later with Jonghyun. I know this would look weird, but it's better than not having him at all on the music video. Beside that, it will reduce their costs since they do not have to record the sing twice, with and without Jonghyun's voice, like they do now. Whooaaaa...it's sooo frustrating and thankfully, four of them still look good on the music video :")

Okay, so that's all I want to say. Ugh...I know I sound like a pissed of fangirl on this review hahahahahahahahaha but, truthfully, that's my personal opinion. Overall, Why So Serious? is below my expectations. It's a messy song with sudden transition eventhough it's fun. The music video itself is a downfall from Dream Girl. But, on the bright note, they are rocking this concept and bravely experimenting with rock music. And luckily, the rest of the album is much better than this track :)
