SOLO DEBUT SUMMER SHOWDOWN: Tiffany & Jessica

Hello everyone! I’m back with the third edition of Summer Showdown!

Since two years ago, I started making review based on several summer releases. Why summer? Like I often said, most big names usually make their comeback during summer.

I started this section with Girl’s Day and SISTAR two years ago then followed by the massive girl group comebacks last year. I enjoyed making it, so I will do it again this year! Hopefully, this will be a regular section in my blog J

This year theme will be solo showdown between two girl group members, Tiffany and Jessica. Both of them are a part of Girls’ Generation, but Jessica left the group in 2014 due to different interests.

Both Tiffany and Jessica made their first solo debut this year on May. Tiffany released her first mini album, I Just Wanna Dance with same title track on May 11. One week later, Jessica released her mini album, With Love, J with title track, Fly on May 17.

Tiffany and Jessica are two strong vocalists in Girls’ Generation, yet their style is different from each other. What will they bring to the K-Pop music scene? Here is my review for Tiffany and Jessica solo venture…………………………………………………………………….

PS: I will only review the title track and its whole concept. Please refrain from commenting on another issue that has nothing to do with the title track.

Tiffany – I Just Wanna Dance

Tiffany surprises us with I Just Wanna Dance. Instead of going with the usual pop or R&B route, she chooses electro pop genre for her title track. Tiffany goes for more retro electro pop. The synthesizer and keyboard sound resembles sound from 80s era.

The way Tiffany’s voice sounds also fit the retro theme where her voice sounds fade away among the electronic music. Unfortunately, this becomes a double-edged sword because it fails to showcase Tiffany’s strong and husky voice, which is her characteristic.

I Just Wanna Dance is a song that you can enjoy listening on daily basis. It’s light and easy on our ear. However, I Just Wanna Dance lacks something that will grab your attention such as strong dynamic, hook and stands out vocal, which is not a good thing for a first solo attempt.

Thankfully, I Just Wanna Dance music video makes up the song weakness. The music video represents Tiffany herself. She looks gorgeous with her styling. We see Tiffany comeback to her hometown in California and wander around from the street, restaurant, motel to the beach.

Tiffany keeps her signature pink tone throughout the music video. The mix of pink and dark tone resulted quite unusual color palette and I like it. The color tone fits the retro theme well too although I’m not sure how the whole music video cooperates with the song lyrics that asked us to dance.

Tiffany gives us another surprise in I Just Wanna Dance music video by putting choreography. Tiffany is known to be not a strong dancer, so it’s shocking to see her tries some sleek choreography. It looks great and different from the usual K-Pop routine. In fact, the dance scene is my favorite scene in I Just Wanna Dance music video.

Jessica – Fly

For her first solo attempt, Jessica sticks to pop genre.  Fly is a catchy pop track with strong hook and nice dynamic. It’s really easy to listen and remember. Jessica’s light voice shines in Fly although there is several times where it sounds too nasally.

Fly also has strong lyrics, which kind of personal for Jessica if you consider her takes part in composition and her situation post-Girls’ Generation. It tells us to never doubt yourself, go higher, and catch your dreams.

Fly works well for Jessica, however it doesn’t really offer something new. It’s a simple pop song with certain instrument (drum) that dominates the whole song. The rap section by rapper Fabolous also doesn’t give significant effect to the song.

Fly music video represents the song lyrics about Jessica’s journey to the top. Instead of sticking with the usual emotional storyline, she puts a twist on storyline, making it fun while still represents Jessica.

Fly music video follows Jessica who got lost in the middle of desert. She found a photo a photo of mountain called Winter Wonderland and tried to go there. In Jessica’s style, she kept her journey pretty by wearing her mini dress, glamour hairstyle, and makeup while taking her suitcase to Winter Wonderland.

The fun aspect also added by the music video setting such as colorful desert and house. Also, Fly choreography looks simple and fun too. Among all those colorful elements, Fly music video still uses light brown for the whole tone, making the whole look seems more calm and fits the song theme.

Despite both being good vocalists, I Just Wanna Dance and Fly prove that Tiffany and Jessica’s music style is different from each other. Tiffany experiments with electro pop genre while Jessica keeps it safe with pop track. Both offer a great music video, which represents their signature style.

Truthfully, both I Just Wanna Dance and Fly doesn’t fully show these two women potential. If I have to choose, the song and music video of Fly works for Jessica better. She still shines with her singing and emotional lyrics although the production value of the song doesn’t really stand out. Plus if we see the live performance, she’s more lively and engaging. Whereas I Just Wanna Dance does the opposite way. It has great production value both the song and music video, but it overpowers Tiffany herself.

China: Girls' Generation Next Destination

Hello everyone!

Today is August 5^th 2014, which means that today marks the seventh year anniversary of Girls' Generation (So Nyeo Shi Dae/SNSD). For those of you who have regularly read my blog, you will notice about how much I like them. Girls’ Generation is not only my most favorite K-Pop girl group, but also my inspiration to reach my dream further. I always admire their hard work towards success.

What Girls’ Generation has achieved for these past seven years are quite rare for girl groups. Topping chart everywhere, having successful tours, and getting various brand endorsements are some of their achievements. Their latest accomplishment is that their newest Japanese album, “The Best”, has topped Oricon Weekly Album Chart for two consecutive weeks in Japan. The girls scored a record by becoming the first Korean group and the second Korean artist after BoA in 2004 to top the chart for two weeks straight.

The girls seem to accomplish everything in seven years of their career, so what’s next from them?

Apparently, Chinese market is the next for Taeyeon, Jessica, Tiffany, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun. It has been reported that the girls will hold their first fan meeting tour in China between the end of September and early October. It stated that they will start their fan meeting in Shenzhen and later on, will be followed by various cities in China.

Beside fan meeting, Girls’ Generation also set to appear in Korean-Chinese variety show program called The Ultimate Group along with label mates, Super Junior and f(x) Victoria. They have finished the recording process last month. The girls branch out their individual activities to China too with Yoona confirmed to star in Korean-Chinese movie, Goodbye Annie, and Jessica modeled for Chinese sports brand, Li-Ning.

Girls’ Generation expansion to China is not really surprising. Since K-Pop popularity in Japan declining, many entertainment agencies have set their eyes to shift their market to China. China dubbed as a prospective market for K-Pop with their huge population and economic growth. Also, Chinese fans have known for their loyalty and willingness, which will contribute a lot to K-Pop idols’ success.

SM Entertainment has known to be the pioneer of this movement. They debuted sub-unit of their group, Super Junior M, which has Chinese members and focused on Chinese market, in 2008. This followed by EXO-M in 2012, which received huge popularity in 2013 along with their EXO-K sub unit. To gain more recognition in China, SM Entertainment also joined partnership with Baidu, China biggest search engine, earlier this year. Looking at their success, it is just about time for SM Entertainment to expand Girls’ Generation to China.

Personally, I am excited with this news. I see it as another challenge for the girls. Currently, the girls are on their comfort zone by having popularity in both Korea and Japan. It is like whatever the girls do; it will always be a success regardless the quality of the material. As a result, there is stagnancy on their music, concept, and most importantly, performance. People have pointed out that some of the girls often look bored and lazy on stage.

That is why I think it is a great thing for them to keep up their spirit and challenge themselves again in Chinese market where the competition is tighter.

As for the success chance, I think they have a chance to success. Their brand name is already super popular and they already have solid fan base in China. At least, they can achieve success based on this.

However, I think they still have to struggle if they want to achieve success above their casual fans. The biggest issue will be the language and culture barrier. Most of K-Pop groups that expand to China has Chinese member, which speak Mandarin fluently and already accustomed to Chinese culture. As for Girls’ Generation, some members have known to be fluent in Mandarin, but still they are foreigners.

Since they still dubbed as foreigner, it will be harder for them to penetrate the market. It is because China has strong restrictions on import, copyright, and broadcasting foreign cultural content. This also explained why it is hard for K-Pop music to reach Chinese market.

Another issue will be the fact that Girls’ Generation is a girl group. It would always be harder for girl group to attract fans everywhere. Boy groups have teenage fan girls that are willing to buy their albums, merchandises, and concert tickets. But for girl group, their fan boys do not have the same willingness like fan girls, which make it harder for them to gain more success.

Other than fan boys, Girls’ Generation usually targets older men and teenage fan girls. Just like what I explain earlier, it would be harder to attract fan girls since they usually preferred boy groups. It is quite difficult for older men too since they already have certain type of music preferences. Most of them do not have much time to pay attention to other type of music, especially new and foreign music like K-Pop.

At the end, all of the above is still a speculation from me. We still do not know what kind of success that Girls’ Generation will achieve in China. Heck, SM Entertainment even have not yet announced whether they would make official debut for the girls in China and what kind of debut that they would make.

One thing that we should take note is that the girls’ success in China depends on the efforts that SM Entertainment and the members willing to do. If they feel that they only need to reach the established fans, they will only get certain amount of success. But if they want to reach new market, the chance of having more success is still huge although the struggle will be times harder.

Whatever happens, I always wish the girls for the best. Once again, happy seventh year anniversary Girls’ Generation! Keep rocking the K-Pop music industry!

[MUSIC ALBUM REVIEW] Girls' Generation - Mr. Mr. (2014)

This year marked the seven years age for Girls' Generation (So Nyeo Shi Dae/SNSD) in K-Pop music industry. Despite the relatively old age for a girl group, the girls keep continue to maintain their position as the leading K-Pop girl group. On February 24th, 2014, they released their fourth mini album titled Mr. Mr. with Mr. Mr. as the title track. So far, this comeback has become the most surprising, mysterious, and of course, full of drama for Girls' Generation. From the sudden release of image teaser, the losing back up file for the music video, the delayed date, the accidental leaks on iTunes to sudden album release without the music video, all of these things has surely make Sones heart race. Also, let's not forget about the supposed "girl group war" between Girls' Generation and 2NE1 that already spiced things up in K-Pop industry. 

Intentional or not, those dramas prior to the new album release have successfully raise people expectations, including me myself, about it. And on the next paragraph, I will let you know whether the album has fulfilled my expectations or not.

This album is heading with a good start through Mr. Mr., the first track. In my opinion, Mr. Mr. is the most sophisticated and mature title track to date from Girls' Generation in terms of lyrics and music. The lyrics still told a story about man and woman just like their past releases. But this time, it shows the grown and independent side of woman. The woman are shown to give encouragement for the man to be brave and take the lead. This is different from Girls' Generation past releases' lyrics that always portrayed them as dependable on the "oppa". Beside that, the usage of word "Mr." instead of "oppa" or boy represented a grown man and grown relationship for both of them.

As for the music, Girls' Generation takes an electronic/euro dance genre through this song. This actually not a new thing for them since the genre has been known as their signature style on Japanese releases. But, this is the first attempt by them in using it as the title track for Korean release. Honestly, I think this is a good tendency for them. Girls' Generation Japanese releases has been known to have edgier, more dynamic, and more mature sound compared to their Korean releases, which always remained catchy, but stagnant. With Mr. Mr., these nine girls try to bring what they have successfully done in Japan and it works. This heavy-based synthesizer song has a killer beat that will surely makes people want to dance to it. It is also a catchy song that will make people sing a long to it, especially during the "Mr. Mr." part that is very memorable. My favorite part started from the addictive beat in 2:35 until the end of the song; the last chorus is killing it.

However, there are also several issues on this song. Mr. Mr. is not a song that will catch people attention when they first listen to it; it takes a while to like this song. Moreover, there are also several disjointed parts on this song such as between the verse and the bridge although it is not as messy as in I Got A Boy. But, the main issue of this song is there is a part, which sounds bland. It is between the bridge to the chorus where the tempo from the bridge should be picked up on the chorus, but it falls below that. Beside that, the bland part unfortunately comes from the girls vocal that are too polished, which makes it lacks of certain "punch". Fortunately, the girls able to pick it up after 2:35. For the last note, as much as I love your tone of voice Tiffany, they should not let her sings the high note because she has the tendency to strain. Despite all of these issues, Mr. Mr. still remained to be a good song.

The second track, Goodbye, happened to be my favorite track on this album. This song has a powerful opening with a crisp bass line accompanied by Tiffany's voice. I love the bass line on this song! It is actually the base for this song, which gives the strong pop-jazz band sound throughout the whole song. Other than the bass line, the girls' vocals also adds nice color for this song. The girls sounds really great on this song especially Tiffany, Sunny, Seohyun, and surprise surprise, Hyoyeon who able to showcase her unique voice. They should sing more on this low-medium range of voice instead of the usual high range since it able to showcase each of their distinct vocal.Beside that, their vocals able to convey the emotions of the lyrics which talked about how a woman got sick of her boyfriend terrible behavior. 

But most importantly, what I love the most from Goodbye is that this song represented Girls' Generation signature sound and how it has grown. It is catchy, addictive, and makes people want to sing along with it like the usual Girls' Generation releases. However, it also shows how they have grown in terms of vocal and music.

Goodbye followed by Europa, another euro dance type of song. Opposite from Mr. Mr. that sounds stronger and fiercer, Europa takes on the light and dreamy side. It has a retro vibe too because of the synthesizer sound throughout the song and guitar sound during the chorus. This song also has a nice flow, The verses are slow, but the beat gradually change faster on the bridge to the chorus. As for the vocals, Jessica shines the most on it since her soft voice matched well with the dreamy vibe of this song.

However, the most interesting thing about Europa is the unique references between the title and the lyrics. Actually, the title itself refers to a moon that orbit to Jupiter and constantly facing it. This refers to the lyrics where a woman is falling in love to a man and always looking at him, but he never notices her just like how Europa is constantly surrounding and looking at Jupiter. 

The next track, Wait a Minute, is a mix between retro and modern sound. The retro sound comes from the gorgeous piano line. The piano line also added a playful and youthful vibe of this song. Meanwhile, the modern sound comes from the strong drum hit. Beside piano and drum, there is also a combination between percussion and synthesizer sound, which channeled reggae sound during Tiffany's part on 2:11. The combination is very unique and it once again portrayed a youthful vibe on this song. The youthful and playful side of this song also can be related to its funny lyrics about a woman who feel confused about the feeling of a man that she loves towards her. 

Another interesting thing about Wait a Minute is a harmonization backing vocal since the first until the end of the song. This harmonization reminds me so much with oldies vocal group that I really like. It was cute, refreshing, and pleasant listening. It also catchy and memorable enough; I bet all of you guys must be humming through the tune unconsciously after listening to this song ;)

After singing along with the previous four tracks, the fifth track, Back Hug, let you to cool down a little bit through its slow tempo. This song will bring you back to the early debut days of Girls' Generation. From the simple acoustic guitar music and the way the girls sing, it reminds me so much with their early days. This is quite understandable since the person who composed this song is also the composer of Girls' Generation songs during their debut year such as Complete, Perfect For You (Honey), and Tinkerbell. This is actually not a bad thing because I really love their early debut days releases.

Another thing that I notice the most about Back Hug is that this song is really soft and sweet like cotton candy. The music is simple and the lyrics are sweet which is about a woman who wants to be together with a man every day. In short, whenever you listen to this song, there is always a feeling where you want to give a back hug to someone special :)

Finally, the last track, Soul, is the most upbeat track on this album. For those of you who feel familiar with this song, this song is a theme song for a game called Blade and Soul that Girls' Generation endorsed. This song has already been released earlier before this album comes out with the Chinese version. Both of the Korean and Chinese version sound good. However, the rap part in the Chinese version surprisingly sounds better with Tiffany raps in English and Hyoyeon in Chinese. 

Find Your Soul opened with a narration that makes you feel like you are in a spaceship. Then, it followed by strong drum percussion, which highly influenced by Middle Eastern music. There is also a strong guitar sound to add fierce side on this song. I really love the combination between these two instruments on this song. It gives strong, powerful, and fierce elements to this song. The vocals itself also helped giving strong vibe to this song. Most importantly, Find Your Soul has a good song flow and dynamic. If you want to listen to the usual upbeat, catchy, and fierce type of song by Girls' Generation, you will like this song.

Overall, Mr. Mr. mini album showcases a mature side of Girls' Generation. Each song shows how much the girls has grown in terms of music and lyrics without being too forced while also still maintain the characteristic of Girls' Generation itself. Though the girls seem heading to more medium tempo type of songs on this album, it does not mean that each song cannot stand on their own. The domination of synthesizer throughout the whole album gives  the retro vibe, which brings the sophisticated image of Girls' Generation. Mr. Mr. mini album has fulfilled my expectation about what kind of direction that I want the girls to take. Hopefully, they will continue to stay and grow with this direction in the future.

Happy 6th Years Anniversary Girls' Generation : 10 Most Favorites Girls' Generation Ballads

Today marked the six years since Girls' Generation (So Nyeo Shi Dae/SNSD) had their first debut stage on SBS Inkigayo. They have come a long way from getting a black ocean to getting  a recognition as the most powerful girl group in South Korea. From zero to hero, from nobody to somebody.

Today, I will dedicated this post to my lovely nine unnies. If you think that I will tell you a story about how I become their fans or how Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Yuri, Yoona, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, and Seohyun changed my life, well.....you're wrong. I will make something different this time ;)

Today, I will give you my own list of my most favorites Girls' Generation ballads. Why ballads? No, it's not because I super love ballad songs (you probably know how I sucked for ballads from my previous posts). It's because for me, one of Girls' Generation strongest point would be their ballads. They have many gorgeous ballads and it's such a pity that it's only get little recognition since most people only know them for their dance songs.

Today, once again, I will present to you nine of my most favorite ballads from them. I only choose nine from many of their great ballads because we all know how nine is a magic number for them ;) So, here is the list............

9. Born To Be A Lady (Girls' Generation : The First Japanese Album)

Born To Be A Lady is quite an unique song for me because of the contrary between the girls' vocals and music. In this song, their vocals were very soft while the music itself had strong beat with the drum sound. Both of them turned out to be complement each other without making it all over the place and make Born to be a Lady to become one of beautiful ballads. 

Beside that, the lyrics also added a strong point to this song. It tells a story about how a girl should not be worry because at the end, they will grow into a woman. This is the type of lyrics that they should give to Girls' Generation more. As the most powerful girl group in South Korea, many young girls look up to them as a role model and I think it would be great if they can sing a song that give a strong message to them like this song instead of constantly doing a song about how to get a boyfriend in a very flirty way.

8. Dear Mom ("Gee" : The First Mini Album)

Dear Mom actually has a pretty standard arrangements for ballad songs with piano (though the intro is very lovely) and strings. But, what makes this song stood out is the lyrics, which all of us can relate to it. It is about how we often do wrong things in front of our mothers and hurt her. Ah...I teared up a bit writing this :"(

Moreover, the way the girls singing this song with full of emotions also made this song sounds great. It's like they feel it and we can feel their emotions too, especially Tiffany's. It's really heartbreaking to hear her sing this since her mother is already passed away. Fany you did an amazing job, your mother must be proud of you out there!!!

7. Lost In Love ("I Got A Boy" : The Fourth Korean Album)

Lost In Love is actually not really Girls' Generation song since its only featured Taeyeon and Tiffany vocals. But since its on their album, I decided to put it on the list. Anyway, Lost In Love strength relied on Taeyeon and Tiffany vocals. We all know how strong their vocals are and surprisingly for this song, they did not sound overpower each other. Instead, they complemented each other and for me, this is how a duet should sounded. 

Furthermore, I really love how they know to put on their emotions based on the song lyrics. They know when they have to sing like they are in great pain because of breaking up and when they have to sing like they are ready to move on, which is the main theme of this song. Those emotions built up this song and made it become enjoyable to listen. In short, they made this song became alive.

6. Time Machine ("Girls' Generation - The Boys" : The First Japanese Repackage Album)

Time Machine showcased different side of Girls' Generation since this song has lower range than most of their songs and yes, they still nailed it. What I love the most about Time Machine beside their attempt to singing in low range is how this song able to tell a story only by the way the girls sing it and the piano sounds. For example, the way Sunny and Seohyun sang and the low piano sound in the first pre-chorus was dramatic and firm. It's different with Tiffany's gentle voice and the piano that sounds higher at the end of the first chorus. Just by listening to this, we know what kind of emotions that they tried to convey.

Time Machine is also one of few Girls' Generation ballad songs that have a music video. The music video portrayed their loneliness that somehow goes well with the regret theme of the song itself. The shots, the settings, and the girls, all of them were gorgeous.

5. All My Love Is For You ("Girls & Peace" : The Second Japanese Album)

All My Love Is For You opened with an unique drum sound that sounds like a marching band and then followed with their catchy and pleasant listening "hiye hiye hiyeee". The usage of drum sound like a marching band sound is interesting for me because it rarely being seen in other ballad songs. All My Love is for You is the opposite of Time Machine. If Time Machine displayed Girls' Generation abilities to sing in lower range, All My Love is for You displayed their abilities to carry high notes. Furthermore, it also showed their amazing harmonizations that rarely be seen in other songs. Oh...I love that!!!

All My Love is for You also had its own music video, which was pretty simple. It's about the girls talking with each other, laughing, and practicing dance in a big old room. It's not really special for me, but it's refreshing to see them be able to react with each other naturally.

4. Forever ("Oh!" : The Second Korean Album)

Forever may sounds like a typical ballads that can be found in Korean dramas (no surprise since it's also a soundtrack for MBC Pasta), but actually, it's more than that for me. Why? First of all, it is because of the lyrics that pretty much resembled Sones and Girls' Generation relationships. This song is about dreaming together with a person for the future, which is the same thing that happened to Sones and the girls since they wanted to be together for a long time. Beside that, this song also showed the girls' strong vocal performances. From Taeyeon that basically slayed this song to Yoona and Hyoyeon that actually sounded nice here. 

And the last, surprisingly, came from the arrangements. What I like the most from it would be how it able to set the dynamic in this song. They knew when they have to put a little instruments and when they have to go all out. As a result, it made the song became more pleasant listening, enjoyable, and flowed nicely. Plus, it also supported each girl vocal to shine in this song.

3. Love Sick (Taetiseo "Twinkle" : Mini Album)

Different from other songs in this list and most Girls' Generation songs, Love Sick took different turn with its music that dominated by 90s R&B music from the beat to the instruments. In my opinion, Love Sick is a hard song. It required vocals that able to belt either low or high notes while also able to display emotions throughout the song. Once again, Girls' Generation (or Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun from Taetiseo/TTS, the sub-unit) nailed it. Accompanied by the strong R&B beat, Taeyeon, Tiffany, Seohyun's vocals made the song flowed smoothly and their emotions made the song alive. I really love how they change the way their singing from their shyness and doubtfulness in the verses to desperation in the refrain.

2. Tears ("Girls' Generation" : The First Album)

Another Girls' Generation song that sounded so old-school, so 90s, Tears. Oh God...those strings at the beginning that sooo old school hahahaha. But, it's quite understandable since it came from their first album. Anyway, what made Tears shined is because it able to show the girls amazing vocal ranges. Okay, maybe you already got bored since I always mentioned about how their vocals were amazing in ballads. But, seriously, Tears is another exception. It's another hard song for Girls' Generation because it required them to sing from low notes to super high notes. The girls nailed it again, especially Jessica (The last high note, it still gave me chills) and Yuri who surprised me the most because she managed to pull those low notes verses really well. Oh...how I wish she continued to sing like this and how I wish they give Girls' Generation more songs like this nowadays.

1. Complete ("Girls' Generation" : The First Album)

Finally, we are at the end of this list. I don't think there would be other song that will end it as perfect as Complete. We know how Complete had a special meaning in both Girls' Generation and Sones heart. Beside the special meaning, what I love from Complete is how a simple song like this sometimes held more power to our hearts than a super epic song. The arrangements are simple, but it enough to touch our heart. The vocals are genuinely nice too, I love how each of them got a fair amount of line.

As much as I love the original version of Complete, I still think the live version from their second Asia Tour topped it. The music was being kept to minimal and it made the vocals sounds more pure. And the pause after Jessica high notes......it still gave me goosebumps every time I watched it.

So, that's nine of my most favorites Girls' Generation ballads. Does your favorite get into the list? I'm sorry if they did not get into it because trust me, I also found it hard to only sort it into nine :(
